This comparison is largely settled. Monocrystalline modules have taken over residential solar because their efficiency advantage now comes with almost no price premium.

The practical difference

Monocrystalline cells are cut from a single silicon crystal, giving 20% to 23% module efficiency. Polycrystalline cells are cast from multiple fragments and land around 15% to 17%. On a size-constrained Texas roof, that gap decides whether you fit the system you need.

Heat performance matters in Texas

Every panel loses output as cell temperature rises. Check the temperature coefficient on the spec sheet, expressed as a percentage per degree Celsius. A coefficient of -0.29%/°C holds up noticeably better in a Dallas August than -0.40%/°C.

What to look for instead of cell type

Efficiency, temperature coefficient, degradation rate, hail rating, and the warranty backer's financial stability tell you more than the crystal structure.
