The inverter is the component most likely to fail first and the one that determines how a shaded roof behaves. It deserves more attention than it usually gets in a sales meeting.

Three architectures

Each trades cost against shade tolerance and serviceability.

  • String inverter: cheapest, one point of failure, shade on one panel drags the string
  • Microinverters: per-panel conversion, best shade tolerance, more units on the roof
  • DC optimizers plus central inverter: per-panel optimization with a single conversion point

What to expect on replacement

String inverters typically need replacement around year 12 to 15, costing $1,500 to $3,000. Microinverters usually carry 25-year warranties matching the panels, but a failure requires roof access.

Texas-specific considerations

Heat shortens electronics life. A string inverter mounted in direct west sun on a garage wall will not last as long as one in shade or inside a garage. Ask where the equipment will be mounted.
